"Suddenly,
right there beside us, an enormous creature surfaced. He looked
curiously at us, almost as if we were the ones behind the bars
in the zoo and he was just visiting! His barnacled back was just
within our grasp and he was so huge and gentle hovering there so
close. Then, as suddenly as he had appeared, he sank elegantly
from sight. It was awesome. We were so excited! . . . Using just an all-but-silent trolling
motor, Capt. Barry toured the bays and patiently waited for the
creatures he somehow knew were there to surface close by. It was
obvious that, however many tours he’d done, he still felt that
same thrill when encountering these gentle giants. Manatees are
an endangered species and Capt. Barry is passionate about
educating people about their plight . . . We lost count of the
many manatees we met and the 1½ tour just flew by. .
